5 Myths About Handmade Jewellery

Today we put the myths to bed

Many people have developed these myths about buying or wearing handmade jewellery and they are just that…myths! I am doing this blog today to put these myths to bed and hopefully, you will see handmade jewellery in a different light.

#1 It’s cheaply made

This is a myth that needs to be busted! Not all handmade jewellery is cheaply made. Some of us use more valuable items such as crystals, gemstones, fresh water pearls and hand blown glass. This is definitely not as cheap as using plastic or fake pearls and normal glass beads. A lot of the pieces have more value than the pieces you can buy in one of the big retailers like Lovisa or Accessorize. I can also tell you that the items have not been mass produced and have been made with love and attention to detail.

#2 It breaks easily or the silver goes off easily

I can tell you that this is definitely a myth that needs to be debunked. The silver items that I use take over a year to start losing their colour and I have acidic skin. The necklaces or jewellery items that I purchase from one of the big retailers only lasts me a month and then it goes green. This should speak for itself. The jewellery also doesn’t break easily, unless you try your best to do so. I am very rough with my jewellery and it almost never breaks. Another thing you should know is that most handmade jewellery places will fix it for you.

#3 No one wears it

Au contraire, have you ever seen photo’s of Coachella, The Grammy’s, The Oscars or actresses and actors walking in the street? You can find many wearing this type of jewellery. The Boho style is especially enjoyed by many. You could look great in a handmade piece, just try it on and you’ll fall in love.

#4 It’s too bold to wear

This is another myth that misleads you because it makes us think that we should not be bold. What is wrong with being bold? Bold is better. Why fade into the background? We were made to stand out. Embrace your beauty, stand out and shine.

#5 It costs too much

This is another myth that needs to be debunked quickly. If you look at one of my necklaces for instance, they would cost on average of about R250. Now go look at something similar in Lovisa or Accessorize…that will cost you over R300. I’m not sure were this myth came from, but most people can quite easily go and look at those shops and you will see that the people in the handmade jewellery industry are not more expensive than those big retailers.
