Evadeen Brickwood Author Interview

Evadeen Portrait smiling2-vertical

(I am changing the format of my author interviews (or any interviews really) a little. I hope you enjoy!)

About Evadeen

Evadeen Brickwood grew up with two sisters in Germany and studied cultural sciences and languages. As a young woman, she traveled extensively and many of her books are inspired by her experiences abroad. Feeling adventurous, the newly qualified translator moved to Africa in 1988 and worked for two years as a secretary and language teacher in Botswana. The author eventually settled in South Africa, where she got married and raised two daughters. In Johannesburg, Evadeen Brickwood studied computers and management of training and worked as a corporate software trainer, professional translator, and lecturer at WITS University. In 2003, she began her writing career with youth novels in the ‘Remember the Future’ series, about adventures in prehistory. The author now self-publishes and has released 10 books in English and German.

Q & A:

#1 Tell us about your books.

I’ve been writing adventure mysteries and time travel books for the past 15 years. The adult novels set in Africa are “Singing Lizards” and “The Rhino Whisperer”. Book 1 in the time travel series, ‘Children of the Moon’, has been translated into German and won the 2017 Book Talk Radio Club Award for best Science Fiction.

#2 Why did you choose the genre that you write in?

I studied Cultural Sciences in Germany and have always taken an interest in lost civilizations. Time travel seemed like a good idea to transport my protagonists into prehistory. The adventure mysteries are based on my own life adventures and have fictional elements.

#3 What are you passionate about?

Kindness and justice.

#4 Talk us through ‘a day in the life of Evadeen’.

Well, my day starts with getting up in the morning, taking care of our dogs and the garden and breakfast, then I usually can’t wait to start working either on translations or writing my books. When the rest of the family comes home in the evening, we often take walks in the park and have dinner together. Kind of boring actually 😊

#5 Is there anything you regret in life?

Sure, mainly bad relationships, but even those have taught me life skills.

#6 What do you like to do for fun?

Going out to dinner with family and friends, movies or theatre.

#7 Where would you go on holiday if money wasn’t an issue and why?

I’d like to visit Australia, because I have heard so much about it and it’s on my bucket list.

#8 If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

My husband, who passed on 18 months ago. He was my best friend and I miss his warm personality and wisdom.

#9 What is your favourite animal?

I adore animals in general, but I’d have to say dogs. We have three rescues and they just give back so much love.

#10 Do you have a small piece of advice for any new writers out there?

Keep learning everything you can about the craft of writing and publishing. Success doesn’t come easy. And it’s better to work with something you have written even if you don’t think it’s any good.

I am currently busy reading one of Evadeen’s books and I am thoroughly enjoying it. She has had quite an interesting life and she is a lovely author. Even adults can enjoy her YA books.
