American Activist

(1913 – 2005)

Many people have heard the story of Rosa Parks but don’t really take notice of what her name is or the story behind this strong woman of God. Rosa was the African American woman who wouldn’t give up her seat on the bus for a white man. Her brave action in 1955 inspired the leaders of the local Black community to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Rosa was known as a civil rights activist and you have to wonder what was going through her mind when she decided, ‘This far and no further!’ I wonder if she felt a little fear as to what would happen if she stepped out of the box that people were forcing her into? Because of her bravery it marked the beginning of the end of the racial segregation on busses.

Rosa has been awarded a few awards in her time because of the role she played in history. Rosa was married to a barber named Raymond Parks but she was born as Rosa Louise McCauley on the 4^th of February 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her parents separated when she was two and she moved with her mom to stay with her maternal grandparents in Pine level, Alabama. Her grandparents were both formerly enslaved and were strong advocates for racial equality. This is most likely why she had the same fire running through her when she was an adult.

After Rosa Parks stood up against racial segregation by staying seated on that bus, she was arrested, lost her job and received death threats for years to come. We have to remember that during this time, the Klu Klux Klan were still very present (I shudder to think and it makes me feel sick to think that God’s creatures could do that to each other).

When Rosa passed away in 2005, she was the first woman to lie in honour at the Capitol Rotunda. As a woman, I salute her bravery to stand, not only against a man, but against the injustices of her era. Both of these actions took a lot of guts in the time that she was living in. Rosa decided one day that she had, had enough and she was going to make her stand. She was a woman of God and I believe that she didn’t make her stand disrespectfully, she just refused to get up and quietly took her stand.
