Book Summary

(From Goodreads)

A girl, a prophecy, and two warring gods equals destiny!

Hope Fairmont longs for a normal teenage life, but with a gift like hers, normal equals healing illnesses and injuries instantly. Keeping a secret like that isn’t easy, but a small town is a perfect place for her to heal those who can’t heal themselves, and an even better place for her father, James Fairmont, to hide his daughter from the rest of the world.

Life takes an unexpected turn when two handsome strangers move into town and begin unearthing other secrets concerning Hope’s future and past, revealing to Hope that her gift for healing may be the fulfillment of an ancient, Japanese prophecy gone wrong.

Staying away from these mysterious newcomers would be the smart thing to do, but Victor’s gentle, easy manner, and Tie’s mixed signals and strange mood swings draw her hopelessly closer to revealing the secret she and her father have been so desperate to hide.

Hope’s life is complicated further with visions of a previous life and the arrival of a supernatural demon sent to assassinate her before she learns what she is truly capable of.

With the support of her father, the fiery loyalty of her best friend Angie, and the child-like love of Kirby, a ten-year-old patient, Hope must fight against the forces of a relentless demon god while unwinding the tangled pieces of her past, proving to herself and those she loves that destiny isn’t determined by some cosmic reading of the stars, but by the individual choices one makes.

My Thoughts

The writing style of Anaya was relatively easy to read. There were certain ways she would say something though that felt like words were missing but I think it’s how they talk in a certain part of the USA. I was committed to the story from page one already. The Healer hit the road running and I was intrigued.

The storyline was brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns. There were so many secrets that were slowly revealed and I felt like I was standing there with Hope getting super frustrated at everyone keeping secrets from her. The Healer kept me guessing most of the time and I was surprised by quite a few outcomes.

The world-building that Anaya does is well written. Not too much and not too little. I enjoyed Hope’s character. She was caring and selfless, yet strong and annoyed with the injustice of her forced fate with a good dash of stubbornness. The dialogue was easy to follow and sometimes a little fast-paced but that helped with the urgency of the story.

I enjoyed the role that the other characters were playing in order to move the story forward. Her best friend was lots of fun! The Healer is book one in a four-book series. The story ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I see the next two books in the series are about her past life and book four is where she’s back out of the coma. I secretly (or not so secretly now) want to read book four first, haha!

I would recommend The Healer to anyone that enjoys Fairytale Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, or Paranormal Fantasy.  I enjoyed reading it. I enjoyed how Hope stood against others trying to force her into a predetermined future. A lovely story about not following what people think you should do with your life because of your talents, but what you want to do.
