My Thoughts
Eva’s writing style felt a little different in this book compared to the last book I reviewed of hers (Vampire Addiction). There were a lot of pointless details that bored me a bit and I found myself skipping over some of the parts. I became committed to the story from the start because it hit the floor running with action and I wanted to know who the man in the window was and what was going to happen next. Eva successfully gave the beginning of the story an ominous feel.
The storyline was interesting and kept me interested and intrigued. I felt a little uncomfortable with how Therese fell for a strange boy so quickly and just after her parents died in a gruesome death. She was suddenly willing to give up all the things that are important to her, as well as her only family member that she had left, just to follow this guy to hell (essentially). Apart from that, the storyline was good. The story kept me guessing in certain instances and I was glad that she didn’t do what Hades had wanted her to do. This book just reminded me why I love Jesus and not one of the Greek Mythological gods.
The world that needed to be created besides the real world, was the Underworld. Eva gives quite a bit of detail in what there is but not really with what it looks like, so it felt like a black and white canvas that I had to try and colour in. So, the world-building could use a little more elaboration. I couldn’t relate to Therese because she’s a seventeen-year-old girl making one bad decision after another. I often wanted to smack her upside the head to catch a wake-up. However, I think that she may have been written that way so that she can grow through the series.
The dialogue was not bad and was age-appropriate. It was understandable and easy to follow. The other characters helped the story to move along. I felt a little concerned about her best friend that seemed to have been abused by her dad when he was drinking and now her mom and brother want her to be okay with the dad moving back. I’m not sure if Eva elaborates on this whole scenario in one of the later books but I felt like it left me a little in the air and worried for her friend.
I would say that this book is more for teens than young adults. Thanatos is part of a series of nine books. At $6.89 per book, I will probably not be continuing with the series as that works out to about R956 and that’s for the eBooks, not even the paperbacks. Though, looking at the blurbs for the other books in the series, my interest is piqued. I would recommend this book to a teenager that likes mythological romances. Or anyone that enjoys books in this genre and for this age group.
