The Stress Related to Being Disorganized

Lack of Time Management

The top reason for being or feeling disorganized pertains to time management. If you’re wasting time, you’re not being productive. If you’re not focused, you’re potentially doing things that aren’t the best use of your time. There are other ways that one adds to the stress of disorganization, without even realizing it sometimes and those include:

  • Procrastinating
  • Too many tasks on your to-do list
  • Waiting until your deadline looms before doing anything
  • Not prioritizing your time and the items on your to-do list
  • Waiting for the perfect moment to do something or the right mood to strike
  • Having your attention taken by less important tasks
  • Waiting for other people to complete their tasks before you even start yours
  • Not planning ahead so that if an emergency strikes, you’re unprepared
  • Using scraps of paper for your notes that can always be misplaced
  • Mixing up project-related notes with personal notes
  • Being distracted by your phone, the ant walking across your window, the hot guy stretching in his front yard…basically anything.
  • Allowing yourself to be interrupted by others while you’re working

We then see what the symptoms are of stress caused by poor time management and being disorganized:

  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Inability to focus or concentrate. Do you ever feel like you are just trying to get yourself through the day?
  • Mental block, memory lapses and forgetfulness.
  • Lack of, or loss of, sleep
  • At worst, withdrawal and depression
  • Also, when you have failed to manage your time you may be unclear about what is important and end up working on the things that are put in front of you or reacting to demands made by others rather than doing the work that needs to be done.

There are ways you can de-stress your life when it comes to lack of organization or time management:

1. Get a good diary or planner that helps keep your appointments and daily duties in check and organized so that you can see what you need to do and on which day of the week. This way you can plan ahead and keep ahead of your tasks and projects.

2. Get a project planner (or get my planner which has a normal daily planner as well as project planners in it). This will help eliminate pieces of paper lying everywhere and you maybe losing those pieces of paper which will set you back with time management.

3. Make a daily schedule that you can follow and that will help you get everything done. Make sure that it’s a realistic schedule otherwise if you don’t get everything done in the day, that will also cause you stress.

4. Get things done today, if possible, don’t leave them for another day because that day could be even busier than this one.

5. Do the hardest thing first, then the rest of your day will be a piece of cake.
