Book Summary

My Thoughts

I had to read the book with a dictionary, which says a lot because I love English. The story is very slow-paced, so if you like that, then you’ll love this book. The story is well-written and well-thought-out. Some people may enjoy the slow read but I struggled to stay interested. It took me two weeks to read this book. I read Cassandra Claire’s book, Queen of air and darkness, in three days.

Even though it’s quite an interesting story, I found it a little boring and I struggled to keep my interest piqued in the story. I was only hooked by the last 10 chapters or so and there are 51 chapters. I was disappointed that Maia’s ending was narrated by Ally and not Maia. The book gave so much info on her biological family but very little of her own story and almost zero about her own story ending. I also didn’t enjoy the loose ends that were left drifting in the wind. Why mention them?

The story is about love, family, loss, pain and forgiveness. But it is also about hope. I wasn’t really kept guessing in the story as it was quite predictable. The author did explain the world around her characters a lot so I could see all the places in my mind. There isn’t much said about the actual protagonist of the story. It was mostly about her great-grandmother, Izabela. I couldn’t relate to them because the story is a historical type story and I knew very little of Maia.

The dialogue was not always easy to understand because the author used old and difficult words. There were other languages that I didn’t always understand either. The other characters in the book were interesting and well thought out. Each one had their own personality and they helped round the story out properly. Most of the characters were complex and not perfect at all which made it more real.

This is book one of a series and there are six books in the series. One for each sister. The next book is about Ally. The story closes Maia’s story and has a lead-in to the next book, leaving it with a bit of a cliffhanger for Ally’s journey. I will probably not read the rest of the books as I found it to be a slow read (as I said before) but the story is not badly written and it is a good story.

I gave this book a 4-star review because of the well-thought-out storyline, the plot and the characters. I thought it would be unfair to drop stars for the slow read as that may be how the author wanted it to be. I don’t usually read Historical Fiction of any kind so I’m not used to it.

If you are someone that enjoys a slow read, then you will love this book. If you enjoy Historical Romances, then you will love this book. I also think it can be classified as a Historical Drama.
