Synopsis

(From Goodreads)

Rae Kerrigan is three months away from graduating from Guilder Boarding school. She is now moonlighting as an operative for the Privy Council, a black ops division for British Intelligence. She’s given a mentor, Jennifer, who fights like a demon –fast, tough, and incredibly strong-willed. Rae finds a strange maternal bond with her. At the same time, she finds a new friend when Devon disappoints her once again.

Childhood memories surface and evoke hidden secrets she is determined to solve. When the Privy Council ask for her help, she finds a friend, and a link, to the Xavier Knights – another agency similar to the Privy Council. Through the mystery and secrets, she begins to question what the PC represents and where she stands.

Will she lose herself in the confusions of the past and present? What will it mean for her future?

My Thoughts

I still enjoyed the writing style of May. You can read more details on my thoughts about it from my review of her first book called Rae of Hope. I won’t be repeating certain things and you can go read them there if you haven’t done so already. Just a note…this book also has a few spelling and grammar errors that need to be attended to. I could just be picking them up due to being a proofreader. The normal reader might not even notice them. Due to me reading the book as a carry on from the first and second one, I was immediately committed to the story as I wanted to know what’s happening. More and more secrets and details are being revealed the more I read.

As with the previous two books in the series, I enjoyed the storyline. May has mystery, intrigue, romance and action all mixed together in the book and it keeps me glued to the book. Just like the previous two books, the story kept me guessing most of the time. There were times that I predicted certain outcomes but mostly I was kept on the edge of my chair. If you would like to read more about my thoughts on the world that the author created, then you can read my previous two posts on this series.

Rae has become more mature since book 1 and has learnt a lot about her tatù. She has also become less trusting and who can blame her. People keep letting her down or turning on her. Watching how her powers grow and evolve has been a lot of fun.

As always, the dialogue between the male and female characters is different which is good as it would be boring if it was the same. It’s easy to follow and brings the image across in my head quite effortlessly. Jennifer is one of the new characters in this book and she seems quite bad-ass and who doesn’t like a girl that can fight back. I have to wonder about her a bit though. Sometimes she seems to not trust the organization she works for. With the new Luke guy, I knew something was going to be up with him. He seems genuinely interested in Rae herself. The other characters are still up to their usual tricks. I’m still not so sure about Riley but time will tell and that’s if he stays in the story at all.

A small warning…there is swearing every now and then, and the use of God’s name in vain every now and then too. This is book 3 of a 12 book series. Most of the storylines are brought to a conclusion at the end of the book but there are some that run into the next book. This series is quite long.
