About Tamsyn
If you told me at the end of my matric year of high school that in five years I would be a self-published writer, I would have been the first to laugh at you. I’ve had a passion for writing for most of my teen life, but without much opportunity in South Africa, I never thought it would be a career. I am very fortunate to be able to say that I wake up every day and get to do what I love. Writing is the food on which my soul thrives, and when I’m not working on something new, I’m grumpy. Literally. For someone who has never traveled to the United States, I have an unhealthy obsession with the South, cowboys, and that sexy southern drawl that comes along with them. There is nothing sexier than a bad boy that speaks with a twang, and a girl who can rock cut off jean shorts with cowboy boots. When I’m not reading the latest novels from my favourite authors, I can be found in front of my laptop getting lost in stories of my own making, all of which include happy endings. Despite many road bumps on my own journey, even at 23, I’m an optimist at heart, and believe everything happens for a reason. I also believe that no dream is too big, and with hard work, determination, and perseverance, anything you want is within reach.
Q & A:
- What is your writing kryptonite?
Oh, that’s easy – fear of failure. I’ve had one book that totally tanked and haven’t had the courage to write since (that was august 2017). Although, I’m starting to ease myself back into it now.
- What motivates you?
Knowing that I get to do what I love for a living and connect with people all over the world who love my books.
- What are all your talents?
I’d like to say writing, because I’ve worked hard at it, and really threw myself into it after publishing my first book. But I think if I pursued anything I’m passionate about, I’d be talented. I think if I weren’t an author, I’d be a photographer or a graphic designer – anything that requires creativity.
- What is your passion?
Aside from writing, I’d have to say reading and if I had the right equipment, then photography too.
- Is there anything you regret in your life?
I have no regrets – just lessons learned, both good and bad, I guess. If I regret something in my life it means I wish it’d never happened, and every experience I’ve had in my life has shaped me into who I am today, and who I will be tomorrow. I can’t regret being that person.
- Where would you love to live one day?
New York. That’s home to me.
- Tell us about the books you write.
I write New Adult romance, which bridges the gap between YA and Adult romance. It’s college romance, but really allows me to explore issues that we go through after we turn 18. I love the angst, and the drama, and I’m a total sucker for a cliche (like asshole hero and wallflower heroine who fall hopelessly in love and live happily ever after).
- What is your favourite colour?
Hmmm. Based on the clothes in my cupboard, it’s a toss up between gray and teal.
- If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
TOUGH ONE… But, I’ll go with my heart and say my Guardian Angel, Darryl. He’s my dad’s cousin, and he died when I was 6, but even today I feel the impact he had on my life. The first tattoo I ever got was for him. If I could have dinner with him one last time, I’d ask him if he’s proud of me and the woman I’ve become. And I’d give anything to see his smile, hear his voice and his laugh.
- Do you have any small piece of advice for any new writers out there?
Just keep going. This industry will eat you alive if you let it, but stay true to yourself, and your voice, and believe that you have the grit to make it. Because that’s what it takes: GRIT.
