Your Identity in Christ

I often hear people saying that you need to know your identity in Christ so that you will be powerful in Christ and I’ve always kind of known what that means but I didn’t fully know what it means. So, as always, I decided to do some digging and found what I’m going to share with you because as always, I thought I’d bring you along for the ride, haha, even if it’s kicking and screaming *insert laughing emoji here* (cause apparently, it’s not professional to actually use the emoji’s…who knew, lol).

Anyhoo, here goes. I’m not going to make any promises that it’s not a long one, but let’s see.

Knowing who you are in Christ is about understanding your identity and value as a believer in Jesus. It involves recognizing the truth of what God says about you and living in alignment with that truth. Here are some aspects of what it means to know who you are in Christ:

  1. Identity as a Child of God:
Understanding that you are loved unconditionally by God as His child (John 1:12; 1 John 3:1).
  2. Forgiven and Redeemed:
Knowing that through Jesus, you are forgiven of your sins and have been redeemed from the power of sin (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14).
  3. New Creation:
Recognizing that you are a new creation in Christ, with old things passed away and all things made new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  4. Victorious Overcomer:
Believing that you have victory over sin and spiritual strongholds through Christ who strengthens you (Romans 8:37; 1 Corinthians 15:57).
  5. Chosen and Called:
Understanding that God has chosen you and called you to live a life that honours Him and reflects His glory (1 Peter 2:9; Ephesians 2:10).
  6. Empowered by the Holy Spirit:
Knowing that you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you, empowering you to live a life pleasing to God (Romans 8:11; Galatians 5:22-23).
  7. Secure in God’s Promises:
Trusting in the promises of God, such as eternal life through Christ, His faithfulness, and His provision (John 3:16; Philippians 4:19).

Practically, knowing who you are in Christ means living out these truths daily, walking in faith, love, and obedience to God’s Word. It’s about growing in relationship with Him, allowing His truth to shape your thoughts, actions, and relationships.

Knowing who you are in Christ isn’t just head knowledge; it’s something you live out. Here are practical ways to deepen and walk in your identity in Christ:

1. Read and Meditate on Scripture Regularly

  • Focus on verses that speak about your identity (e.g., Ephesians 1–2, Romans 8, Colossians 3).
  • Try journaling what God says about you and how that applies to your life.
  • Example: When you read “I am more than a conqueror through Him who loved me” (Romans 8:37), ask: What does that mean in my current struggles?

2. Replace Lies with God’s Truth

  • Catch negative thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “God must be disappointed in me.”
  • Counter them with truth: “I am God’s workmanship” (Ephesians 2:10), “There is no condemnation in Christ” (Romans 8:1).
  • You can even create a “truth list” and say it out loud daily.

3. Speak and Pray Your Identity

  • Pray scriptures that affirm your identity. E.g., “Lord, thank You that I am a new creation in You.”
  • Declare the truth over yourself; your words shape how you see yourself.

4. Surround Yourself with Godly Community

  • Spend time with believers who speak life and remind you who you are in Christ.
  • Accountability and encouragement go a long way in helping you live it out.

5. Live with Intentional Obedience

  • Act like the person God says you are, even when you don’t feel like it.
  • Example: If God says you are patient and kind, practice it, even when it’s hard. Faith and obedience often come before the feeling.

6. Worship and Gratitude

  • Worship helps re-center your heart on God’s greatness and love.
  • Gratitude shifts your focus from inadequacy to abundance and grace.

7. Ask the Holy Spirit Daily for Help

  • The Spirit reminds you of truth, comforts you, and empowers you to live it out (John 14:26, Galatians 5:16).
  • A simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, remind me who I am in Jesus today.”

8. Serve and Love Others

  • As you give out what God has put in you, love, grace, and forgiveness, you begin to experience that identity more deeply.
  • Serving from a place of identity (not to earn identity) solidifies who you are.

9. Keep Growing

  • Read books, listen to sermons, or podcasts that focus on identity in Christ.

Growth deepens understanding and helps you mature into that identity.

·         I Am a New Creation

“I am a new creation in Christ.”
Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come! – 2 Corinthians 5:17 AMPC

·         I Am a Child of God

·         I Am More Than a Conqueror

“I am victorious in Christ.”
Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us. – Romans 8:37

Wow! I feel I now have a definite understanding of who I am in Christ. Confessing God’s Word over myself daily also helps me to be reminded of these truths. I have added them to my other daily affirmations of God’s Word. I hope this helped you as well and spoke to you on a personal level. You are loved by God and you are seen by Him, even when it doesn’t feel like you are. Don’t let the devil steal your joy or lie to you about who you are in Christ and how He feels about you.
