Overcoming a Poverty Mindset

I have often wondered what it means to have a poverty mindset. I was sure that to combat it, it didn’t mean that you could spend money on whatever your heart desires, even if you don’t actually have the funds for it and should be spending your money on more important things. I was right. However, there are a few things to consider if you want to move beyond a poverty mindset and live in abundance.

As usual, I decided to investigate and wanted to share what I found with you. I hope it helps you to change your outlook and perspective on your financial situation.

In a biblical context, having a poverty mindset refers to a mentality characterized by fear, lack of faith in God’s provision, and a focus on scarcity rather than abundance. Here’s how it typically manifests and how one can overcome it:

Characteristics of a Poverty Mindset:

  1. Fear and Anxiety: Constant worry about not having enough.
  2. Lack of Generosity: Difficulty in giving or sharing resources.
  3. Limited Vision: Inability to see opportunities or blessings.
  4. Dependency: Reliance on self or others instead of trusting God.
  5. Doubt in God’s Provision: Questioning God’s ability to provide.

Overcoming a Poverty Mindset:

  1. Renew Your Mind: Transform your thinking through God’s Word (Romans 12:2). Replace fear with faith in God’s promises of provision (Matthew 6:25-34).
  2. Practice Generosity: Start giving freely and cheerfully, trusting God’s abundance (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
  3. Seek First God’s Kingdom: Prioritize spiritual growth and trust in God’s timing (Matthew 6:33).
  4. Change Your Confession: Speak positively about finances and provision (Proverbs 18:21).
  5. Stewardship: Manage resources wisely and seek counsel (Proverbs 11:14).

By aligning your mindset with biblical principles of trust, generosity, and faith in God’s provision, you can overcome a poverty mindset and experience the fullness of God’s blessings in your life.

All this being said, it is important to watch your words and your heart. Do not speak death over your finances or your situation. If you speak the Word of God, which says that He wants abundance for us (2 Corinthians 9:8 AMPC and John 10:10 AMPC), then speak that over your bank account. I’m not going to lie, this is not always easy because when people ask for stuff or friends want you to go out with them, but you don’t have the funds, then what do you say without speaking death?

I’ve learnt it this way or a variant of this: “I would love to go but I’m still waiting for the funds to clear into my life from God.” In this way, your friends know that you are not rejecting them but that you currently don’t have the funds to go out, but you won’t speak death over your bank account and you’re believing for a miracle. Today was a short one, but I hope it has helped you the way it helped me to change my mindset. It does take work, but I’m sure you will be up to it.
