15 Ways to Romanticise Your Life

Do you ever feel that life can get a little monotonous? That everything is just the same old, same old? Do you ever wish your life was a little more romantic, like in the movies? Well, you’re not alone. I have wished these things too, so I decided to do a little research on what others are doing to romanticize their life and of course, I asked ChatGPT for its opinion too.

The outcome? Well, I’ve selected 15 simple items that are relatively affordable and beautiful to help you romanticize your life and find joy, meaning, and beauty in everyday moments. I hope they will help you too.

1. Light a Candle Just Because

Use candles during breakfast, while journaling, or when you wind down at night. Instant atmosphere, no special occasion needed. If it’s scented, that’s even better.

2. Make Your Morning Drink a Ritual

Whether it’s tea, coffee, or hot lemon water, make it slow and intentional. Use a pretty mug, sit by a window, and sip without distractions. This will not only put a little cosy into your life but also some much-needed quiet ‘me’ time to do some self-reflection and relaxation.

3. Walk Like the Main Character

Put in your earbuds, play a soundtrack (classical, lo-fi, or from your favourite movie scene), and go for a walk like you’re in a movie. Or you can put on your favourite music and walk like you own the sidewalk (without being obnoxious, of course).

4. Write Letters to Yourself

Leave little love notes or affirmations around your room or in your planner. Future-you will love the little bursts of self-love. You can even ask loved ones to write you a few notes to place around so that it will be a surprise for you. You could do the same for them because who doesn’t love a little attention from our loved ones?

5. Read Outside

Take a blanket and read under a tree or by a sunny window. Add a picnic snack and you’re living a novel-worthy moment. Go sit at a park (a safe one), if you can or have one close to you.

6. Dress Up for No Reason

Wear that dress, lipstick, or shirt that makes you feel amazing, even if you’re just going to the store. Embrace your fashion sense, even if it’s a little on the weird side. Have fun with it! You only live once; take advantage of it. You don’t always need to follow society’s norms.

7. Curate a Life Playlist

Make playlists for different moods: rainy days, cosy nights, cooking dinners, etc. Let your life have a soundtrack. I do this as a writer. I have playlists for love scenes, break-up scenes, etc. Here is the link to my Spotify if you’d like to follow me or one of my playlists. I haven’t done the cooking one, but it’s definitely next on my list.

8. Romanticize Chores

Put on music or an audiobook while cleaning. Pretend you’re in a montage scene from a movie — a magical transformation is in progress. Use your imagination, the sky’s the limit. Do a battle of the dances or an Idols performance. Just remember to clean in between, hahaha!

9. Journal by Candlelight

Reflect on your day, write poetry, or dream on paper. It feels more poetic and grounding when the lights are dim. It also helps to get your day or things that bothered you in the day out of your mind and onto paper. Sometimes this also helps you to see things more clearly and find solutions for issues you may be having. You can even do a little watercolour painting in your journal. I love doing this and I’m not an artist in the traditional sense of the word.

10. Use Real Dishes

Even if it’s just toast, serve it on a plate you love. Bonus: add a cloth napkin or fresh herb garnish. Don’t just survive in life; you need to thrive. That means that you need to add a little beauty, even to a plain meal. Give it a little extra effort. To be honest, I struggle a little with this one because I don’t enjoy cooking and just want to get it done. But I will be making more of an effort.

11. Take Golden Hour Photos

Capture the light as it hits your room, your pet, your face, and your coffee. It helps you notice beauty in the ordinary. I love this! The golden hour hits my bedroom very nicely in the afternoon. I don’t have my pets in my room, but I can get creative.

12. Keep Fresh Flowers or Greenery

You don’t need a big bouquet. One bloom or even a foraged wildflower in a jar can make your space feel like a secret garden. Now, I have a confession to make…I kill everything I try to grow. I DO NOT have green fingers at all. I can’t even keep a succulent alive! I either give it too much water or too little. But a wildflower is doable because it’s not meant to last that long, then I won’t feel bad that I basically murdered the poor thing.

13. Listen to Rain or Nature Sounds

Even when indoors, nature sounds can soothe and transport you, perfect for reading, meditating, or unwinding. I live on a plot and I absolutely love the sounds of the variety of birds that we have there. They always bring a smile to my face. Sometimes I also feel like listening to rain and thunder, so I will put on my earphones and sit in a dark room with the light on and read. This way I can try and make my brain think that it’s raining, haha.

14. Give Names to the Days

Try “Slow Sunday,” “Wistful Wednesday,” or “Cosy Friday.” It makes the week feel like a story with themed chapters. You can even challenge yourself to put a photo a day on Instagram, showing off your romanticized day with the name in the caption. You don’t even have to put anything else.

15. Say Things Out Loud

Say, “What a beautiful morning,” or “I’m grateful for this quiet moment.” Speaking it into the air adds weight to it, like a scene in a book. It also reaches your ears and makes you believe it a little more.

That’s the 15 simple ways to romanticize your life but I decided to be nice and add a bonus 15 items for those of us that are Christians. So, here are 15 Christ-centered, budget-friendly ways to romanticize your life to live more intentionally, with wonder, joy, and deep awareness of God’s presence in your everyday routine.

1. Begin the Day with Jesus

Before scrolling or rushing, take a moment to say, “Good morning, Lord.” Whisper a prayer or read one Bible verse to set the tone. You can also confess any verses that you know by heart. Or chat to God about any dreams you may have had.

2. Go on a Prayer Walk

Stroll slowly, noticing the beauty around you, and talk to God as you walk, about your thoughts, dreams, worries, or simply praise Him. It doesn’t have to be a long walk; it can take a few minutes to help you focus on God’s creation of which you are one.

3. Journal Your Conversations with God

Treat your journal like a sacred space. Write letters to God, reflect on what He’s saying to you, and celebrate answered prayers. I even add things that I didn’t know and researched and that means a lot to me. There are no rules here.

4. Light a Candle When You Read the Word

Create a soft, reverent mood while studying your Bible. Let the flicker remind you of Jesus, the Light of the World. Having a scented candle will be even better. You can use the same one each time, so when you smell it, it will make you think of Jesus.

5. Decorate with Scripture

Put verses in picture frames, on sticky notes, or painted on rocks around your home. Let God’s Word remind you throughout the day. I also have mine as my desktop wallpaper and phone wallpapers, which I change every now and then. I have even started selling them now.

6. Take Communion at Home

You don’t need a church service to remember Christ’s sacrifice. Use bread and juice with a heart full of reverence and love. Remember Jesus’ sacrifice for your sins, your salvation and your healing.

7. Read the Psalms Aloud

Many of them are songs or prayers — read them like poetry. Let the words become personal declarations over your day. You can even put a little background music on and try to say it with the music.

8. Romanticize Rest

Set aside intentional Sabbath moments (a nap in the sunlight, a tech-free hour, or a slow meal) as holy gifts of rest from the Lord. This is very important for your mental health. If you’re self-employed, this is also an important practice to employ.

9. Worship While Doing Chores

Put on your favourite worship playlist and sing your heart out while washing dishes or folding laundry. Praise turns the mundane into sacred. I love doing this because it makes the time go faster. You don’t need to be the next Kelly Clarkson to enjoy praising God.

10. Watch Sunrises and Sunsets with God

Sit in stillness, watch the sky, and say, “Thank You for painting this just for me today, Lord.” We quite often don’t appreciate the sunrises and sunsets and I can tell you, here in South Africa, they are truly beautiful. I know in other countries it is also beautiful. You don’t need to say anything else; you can sit in appreciative silence.

11. Share Meals with Gratitude

Light a candle or play soft music during dinner, and pause to thank God deeply for the meal, the moment, and the people you’re with. Even if you’re like our family that doesn’t have a dining room table (or space for it), you can even do this sitting in your lounge. Usually, we would watch YouTube videos or Netflix, but it is also good to enjoy each other’s company so that we don’t live past each other.

12. Send Encouraging Notes or Verses to Friends

A little beauty in someone else’s day will overflow joy into yours. Share hope, truth, or just say, “Thinking of you.” A really good way to do this is to get creative with handwritten notes that you can make beautiful. They will appreciate the time you spent on doing something for them as well as the actual message.

13. Dress as God’s Masterpiece

Put effort into your look, not for vanity, but as a reflection of the fact that you are wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). You don’t have to do this daily if you are someone that works from home (like I do) but there should be days that you make a little more effort so that you can feel good in something that reflects your personality instead of just tracksuit pants and a baggy shirt all the time (even though those are quite comfy).

14. Sit with Him in Silence

No prayers. No music. Just sit quietly and let yourself be with God like close friends who don’t need words to connect. Sitting on your porch or by a window can also help you be quiet in His presence.

15. Let Your Life Be a Love Story with Jesus

Remind yourself: I am the Bride of Christ. Speak love notes to Him. Watch your days become rich with meaning. Turn to the Psalms if you need help with this. The same way you would send love messages to your spouse or loved one (I’m hoping), you can send notes to Jesus as well or speak them out loud.

That’s the 15 extra tips on romanticising your life as a Christian. Some are a little similar to the first 15, but with a Christian twist, they are still great tips, though. Just remember, there are no rules when it comes to making your life a little more romantic, you do you. I really enjoyed researching this and will be implementing it into my everyday life. I will also be creating videos of it because I believe that it will help me stick to it and not let the everyday rush of life get the better of me.
