Love is Patient – Canvas Splash Art

My daughter and I decided to do a fun project together. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how well it was going to work, but it ended up looking quite nice.

Now, I am well aware that it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but we had a lot of fun doing it and our masterpiece is now hanging in our kitchen.

First, we took a large canvas and placed it on a drop sheet outside. I then took powder paint and mixed it with water, so far so good. Then I tried to get the paint into a water balloon. That was exceedingly difficult! It took me about half an hour to one balloon.

Then, we went outside and I threw the balloon at the canvas to get the paint to explode onto the canvas when the balloon broke. Well…that was the plan. It didn’t work. The balloon bounced off the canvas. What?! How is that even possible? I then tried to throw harder and I missed the canvas altogether and broke on the grass behind the canvas. Seriously? I thought I would start crying at this point, but we soldiered on. I tried another two times with the paint balloon, both breaking on the grass behind the canvas (rolling my eyes profusely at this stage). I then decided to try something different.

I went and fetched the syringes. We loaded them with the powder paint and then stood over the canvas and squirted the paint out hard onto the canvas so that it gave a splat effect. That’s when I ran into the next issue…you could hardly see the paint, it was so light and weak. After talking to myself a few seconds and convincing myself not to set everything on fire, I went looking for my acrylic paints.

We then filled the syringes with the acrylic paint (and some said craft paint) and we squirted the paint out hard again onto the canvas, each taking turns. Now that was fun!

By the time we finished, our feet were full of paint spots and our canvas was full of vibrant color. We then left it to dry overnight.

The next morning we wrote out 1 Corinthians 13:4 – 8 on it with black paint. Well, I did it but my daughter was there for moral support because we couldn’t have two people writing it out 🙂 Once it was done, we were very proud of our masterpiece. We congratulated each other on a job well done and once dry, my husband put it up on the kitchen wall for us.

I must say, it was well worth the effort. We had a wonderful mother/daughter bonding time and we created something beautiful that we were proud of.

The words on the canvas are ones we try very hard to live by in our family, so this is a bright and friendly reminder of the words in the Bible verse.

Enjoy the moments
