Acting Socially Acceptable – Fake Or Not?

People act all different ways, some act in a way that is very ‘proper’ and others act in a way that is supposedly not ‘proper’. I have been wondering if acting ‘socially acceptable’ in public but being a different person when you are around your family is not maybe more fake. This is something that I have wondered about for ages because I used to feel the pressure to be ‘normal’ and not be my weird self, so what would happen is I would be acting all ‘prim and proper’ in front of people and when I was alone, I would be me. The only problem with this was that sometimes the ‘real me’ would shine through the ‘prim and proper’ and I would get this scary combination and then I would get the ‘looks’ from people because now I’m acting out of my apparent character. Let me tell you something…this is exhausting! I stayed in a state of depression and self-loathing because I wasn’t being true to myself and telling everyone to take a flying leap.

Once I got divorced, I was able to start going back to the way I used to be (I’m not saying get divorced to do that, I just had a husband at that point who didn’t like my weirdness and tried to change me for almost 13 years and then things happened in our relationship and we got divorced. I’m not pro-divorce, if you can work it out, then you need to do that, divorce is not the answer for most marital issues), anyway, where was I? Oh yes, after getting divorced, I started moving back to the way I used to be. It has been six years and I’m still not fully back to how I used to be before I got married because many things have changed me in life, but I am quite happy with who I am now and I will never let anyone do that to me again.

When it comes to acting socially acceptable in public, there should be a happy medium. Diplomacy is probably a good thing to keep in mind and also treating people the way you would want to be treated would be very important. So, telling someone that they are fat and ugly because you are a straightforward person and are true to yourself would not be acceptable because that is nasty and being true to yourself does not require you breaking someone else down. Treat people the way you would want to be treated, you would not appreciate someone telling you that you look fat and ugly.

“being true to yourself does not require you breaking someone else down”

I have even come across people who act loud and friendly in public, but they are actually introverts and it almost kills them to be that way because they have been told that being an introvert is boring they try and be the complete opposite of what their personality actually is. I have found extreme extroverts (like myself) tone themselves way down because people have said they are too loud and colourful and, in your face, and it almost kills them to be ‘introverts’ but they want to be accepted…not good.

I strongly believe you should just be yourself and not worry about what people say about you. You are awesome the way you are. If you don’t want to wear make-up, then don’t. If you want to bling on your face, then do so. If you want to look dramatic every day, then have at it. If you want to look low-key every day, then do it. Life is short and you should spend your life being the best you can be.

“I strongly believe that you should just be yourself and not worry about what people are saying about you. You are awesome the way you are.”

As long as you are not hurting people as you go along and being obviously disgusting or perverse, then I think that you are safe to be yourself. Be proud of who you are and what you have accomplished. Don’t allow people to make you feel less than what you are. And above all, remember to treat people the way that you would want to be treated. I think if you do this, then you will be fine and you can be yourself.

“And above all, remember to treat people the way that you would want to be treated.”

I have done this now in my life. I am weird and proud of it. I get comments like ‘you’re a bit extreme sometimes’ or ‘wow, you quite a weird one’ and my reply? “Yes, thank you so much for noticing!” I am the best version of myself at the moment and I’m still learning new things about myself and what I’m made of, daily and I’m loving it. I’m not prideful or think I’m better than other people, I just like myself for the person that God created the way that He did.

I hope that you are being yourself completely and I hope you are enjoying your life as you.
