About Sian
Hailing from Johannesburg South Africa, Sian B. Claven has enjoyed stories for all her life, whether she was reading them or making them. She has written for as long as she can remember, but Ensnared is the first book she decided to publish. Moving towards writing more for the horror / paranormal thriller genre, Sian has subsequently published the first two books in The Butcher Books series, Tatum and Kallista. When Sian isn’t thinking of ways to terrify people, she enjoys writing science fiction stories, poetry, and rather long and gushy birthday wishes. When she isn’t working on her writing you can find her knitting, scrapbooking, reading, or playing Xbox. Sian previously reviewed for The Blithering Bibliomaniacs and still reviews in her private capacity. She clearly doesn’t know what the words rest and relaxation mean, at least not in the traditional sense.
Q & A:
- Tell us about your books.
What can I tell you about my books? I write mostly horror although I have published a fantasy short story. My books are based around an idea I have while having conversations or while looking at a cover and mostly I aim to try to gross people out or scare them.
- Why did you choose the horror genre?
Oh, I didn’t choose the horror genre, the horror genre chose me (Hehehe). No seriously, I was trying to write a nice fantasy novel one day and the characters just took over and before I knew it BOOM I had a horror book written. From there it just went on and on until I finally accepted that the horror genre was just who I was.
- What motivates you?
Toni Cox does – a lot of the time. So does my sister Jackie and my best friend Darren. Other than that I’m motivated every time I get a review, good or bad, to continue writing because someone out there is taking the time to read my books – which is still really weird to me.
- Talk us through ‘a day in the life of Sian’.
There is a lot of stress. I get woken up early, have a cup of coffee and whoosh it’s off to work for me. I spend my entire day at my day job making sure that nothing catches fire and that everything needs to get done before whoosh it’s off to the house for me where after a cup of coffee I sit down at my keyboard and start working on the marketing of my books. Once that’s done I get to work on the writing section. Around ten it’s time for a hot bath and bed, where I read the books I have committed to reviewing.
- Is there anything you regret in life?
Absolutely, there’s a lot of regret but I wouldn’t change it because it’s all led me to where I am now and where I am is exactly where I want to be.
- What makes you livid?
When people abuse animals or women. I will go berserk. I will beat people. I will cause a scene. There is no limit to what I would do.
- What is your favourite colour?
All the shades and hues of Blue.
- If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I know I should probably name a really important author at this point but the truth is I really want to have a conversation with Hitler and figure out what the hell was going on in that head of his but that stems from my passion for History.
- Is there a certain theme that you go for with your book covers?
Dark and creepy is definitely my main theme! Hehehe.
- Do you have a small piece of advice for any new writers out there?
When you write your first draft, just write it. Don’t try and edit it while you’re writing, don’t worry about it. Just get all those words down. There’s plenty of time to edit and fix after all the writing is done.
