Book Summary

Workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting has just done the unthinkable. She’s made a mistake so huge, it’ll wreck any chance of a partnership.

Going into utter meltdown, she walks out of her London office, gets on a train, and ends up in the middle of nowhere. Asking for directions at a big, beautiful house, she’s mistaken for an interviewee and finds herself being offered a job as a housekeeper. Her employers have no idea they’ve hired a lawyer–and Samantha has no idea how to work the oven. She can’t sew on a button, bake a potato, or get the #@%# ironing board to open. How she takes a deep breath and begins to cope–and finds love–is a story as delicious as the bread she learns to bake.

But will her old life ever catch up with her? And if it does…will she want it back?

My Thoughts

I love Sophie’s writing style. She is able to bring across all the emotions that the characters are going through. I also love how she peppers her writing with humour. The fact that the story started with a questionnaire and lines being crossed out which also made me giggle, piqued my interest. I was hooked from the beginning.

The storyline was brilliant! A lawyer turned housekeeper is so unbelievable yet it was a lot of fun to read. The disasters that happened at the beginning of Samantha’s stay in the house were so funny and I could literally see her frustration play out in front of me like a movie. I am glad that she got help eventually because I’m sure she would have burnt the house down eventually…or poisoned someone.

The story had me on the edge of my seat at times because of the web of lies that she was weaving. I couldn’t always predict what was going to happen next which is always fun. The town and the house that Samantha fled to sounds idyllic! I would love to live there. Sophie described them so beautifully that I could see it in my mind’s eye. I liked the fact that by the end of the book, Samantha was very straightforward with people who came at her with fake nonsense and lies. She did irritate me at times, especially as she was supposed to be so intelligent yet acted like a complete dope sometimes but it did help the story progress.

The dialogue was easy to read and I didn’t struggle with anything. I enjoyed all the characters but already knew from the beginning which characters were the problem children. I loved Nathaniel’s mother, she was so helpful and such a lovely mother figure. Trish and Eddie irritated me but they made the story for the most part. This is a standalone book and is not part of a series.
I would recommend The Undomestic Goddess to anybody who loves Chick Lit and Romance novels and if you love to read how the protagonist makes bad decisions often and has to try and fix them without losing everything. Sophie Kinsella always knocks it out of the park with her books. That’s probably why they love using her books for movies. A definite must-read!
